about the work
The time I spend travelling through the woods, experiencing “poetic” moments, inspires my creative process.
My work is an object based investigation into some of the ways in which I’ve connected with nature throughout my life; organized into an artificial landscape composition. Each sculpture uses layers of clay, glazes, flowers, and plaster. These materials are fired within a slab constructed form then cut with a tile saw to reveal the artificial geologic cross section. The sculpture gives the viewer an opportunity to take a visual journey through the work in a similar way that I would, for example, vary my focus from a flower floating along a bubbling creek to the changing colors of the horizon skyline, while walking in the woods. I’ve spent a large portion of my life viewing landscapes from multiple vantage points, directly and indirectly, through walking in the woods, flying over vast expanses in aircraft or examining lands through maps.
The connection I have with nature is the driving force for my work and in many ways I think of my sculptures as a way to pay homage to my wilderness experiences.
